As a freelancer, should I do spec work where I create and delivery some of my work before I get hired? Or even participate in a contest where I may have a chance to win if my work gets selected?

When you're branding yourself through your business website, giving away freebies like an E-book may work magic, but when you're starting out in your freelancing career - you have to beware of those who'll ask for free work and won't pay you a dime for your effort. For safety, you can always point the client to samples of your works online. Just imagine if that client will ask for spec work from 100 applicants, like asking for a 500 word article...and the client leaves with a lot of stuff that can be a compilation of a book written - for FREE. Just because you're a freelancer, it doesn't mean you work mostly for free. You need to know your worth as a freelancer! Here's a campaign that's worth checking: No!Spec
