This is a very sensitive issue as some clients have already a preset budget for the project and may not be able to give in to your request. Setting your rates right in the first place will avoid you feeling that your freelancing rates are low and there are ways to know if yours are competitive enough for your industry. Now, when it comes to asking for a raise - it's like asking for a promotion and the basics of the traditional office setup applies. You don't simply ask for more, but you justify it with what you have achieved so far for the client and what your efforts will cost him/her in the future. For example, you may be blogging for your client and you're bringing in 100% more traffic than before you were hired. Your blog may not bring in sales, but the traffic you bring can be potential clients in the future, even if you're not blogging for that client anymore. You sell that idea to your client that you're giving him/her value for as long as his/her website is on the Web. This can be just one of the selling points you can cite to negotiate a higher rate than what you are receiving right now. |
