Is Freelancing Right for You?

To Freelance… or Not to Freelance? A tough question to answer, specially when long-term work is truly hard to find these days.  If the thoughts of freelancing have been gnawing on your mind lately, maybe now is the best time to give it a try.  Who wouldn’t want to work at home, being your own boss at your own time?  If you think that freelancing sounds this simple, you are deceived.  There’s more to freelancing than meets the eye.

By the word itself, freelancing gives you the freedom to choose when to work, wherever and however you want to.  This is one major perk you wouldn’t get in your usual 8 to 5 job.  No nagging boss to breathe down on your neck, no nasty office politics, and no more hassles of daily commute.  Still, with freedom comes responsibility:  Huge One!  If you don’t have the discipline to submit quality works on deadlines, you might as well be broke.

Why Should You Freelance in the First Place?

Life comes with risks, and so is the world of freelancing.  It is a plateau for the bravest and the most cunning.  To be an independent contractor means:

1.  Being Your Own Boss

If you have always been a self-starter and you love taking accountability on no one but yourself, freelancing will work best for you.  You only have your clients to please.  There’s no need to wait for approval from your superiors and you won’t be subject to monthly performance reviews.  You take credit on the work you do, as well as taking the blame when you screw up.

2.  Freedom to Set Your Time and Rates

What could be more rewarding than getting paid for what your efforts truly deserve? Freelancing gives you the freedom to set your rates and more.  You don’t have to sleep late or wake up early.  You are the master of your own time, where you can take a day off – anytime you wish.

3.   Peace

If you’re the type of person who can focus more on a task in a peaceful environment, minus the office gossip folks, freelancing definitely gives you that comfort.  You now have all the time to be more productive without being bugged by chatterboxes.  At last!  A break from all that office drama! Bored?  Simply schedule a meet up with your friends.

4.  Variety

Freelancing gives you all the chance to put on your best freelancer’s clothes and shine.  You can definitely work on projects you love doing, which can become more enjoyable since you are passionate about it.  There is more room for you to grow and excel in your chosen field.  Work becomes.. Fun!

5.  Limitless Opportunities

There are many who are now working as a full-time freelancer.  Others have even quit the security of their office jobs to work at home.  They are getting the best of both worlds:  a great career and a quality time for family.  Then, there are those who have become web entrepreneurs, who earn thousands of dollars doing what they love to do best.

Kelly James-Enger, the author of Six Figure Freelancing, says ” If you’re not offering a service people are willing to spend money on, you’re not going to be in business (for long). “  Do you have a special skill that is in demand?  Can you sell those skills?  You have the passion and now, it is high time to get real.  Work hard to get your first freelancing gig.  Good Luck!
