What Makes Social Media Your Best Friend in Job Hunting?

Social media is not just a fun tool, but it opens limitless opportunities for businesses and independent workers alike.  Social media is perfect for freelancers because:

  1. It’s so portable you can connect with the world even on your mobile phone.
  2. You get to see who is interested in you and your services.
  3. It’s FREE!  The best things in life comes for free and social media costs next to nothing.
  4. You can promote yourself to a larger audience, whenever and however you wish to.
  5. It’s great for citing references and making connections with the right people and businesses.

What are the Famous Social Media Sites Used for Finding Work?

Aside from thousands of job boards and beta freelance sites on the web, you simply cannot underestimate the value of those who are major players in the social media game.  These niche sites are:

1.  LinkedIn

If you don’t have a profile, you definitely need to make one.  This site is famous for making connections with businesses, employers, and specific companies.   The more connections you make, the larger your network will be, and the more chances you have of finding work.  Since this site is oozing with plenty of professionals, you might want to spice up your profile to get that attention.

2.  Twitter

The Twitter-dom may be a hodge podge of people shouting nonsense, but those tweets can be useful as well if you know how to connect with people of the same interests.  With various twitter tools such as Tweet Deck and CoTweet, sending replies and retweets are easier.  You can always do a keyword search on the words freelance, freelancing, outsourcing, and other words related to your search.  Follow only those who can give you relevant info.

3.  Facebook

Facebook’s growth had left many of us wondering about the powers of networking.  Though most people use this platform for personal reasons, there are various groups and fan pages which you can take advantage of.  You can join a freelancer’s network and get the latest news on job openings.

Social media networks allow you to interact with your potential clients and co-freelancers.  This is a great tool not only for finding freelance work, but for mutual interactions and learning as well.  Keep in mind that there are clients who will check on you using social media, so be careful what pictures you post out there.  Know the right people to follow.  Build trust and meaningful relationships.  Keep Your Connections Open!
